Suicidal Ideation among Alcoholics Moderating Effect of Alcohol Use

Abstract
Suicide is a leading cause of death among alcoholics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderating effects of alcohol use between suicidal related factors and suicidal ideation among alcoholics. A total of 764 answers were collected from alcoholics who admitted to the hospital and a face to face survey by mental health social worker were conducted. Collected data were analyzed by frequency, t-test, one way ANOVA, moderated multiple regression. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, suicide attempts of alcoholics reported 38.7% and this was 10times higher than Korean adult¡¯s suicide attempt. Also subjects with suicidal ideation showed over 50 year old, no spouse, unemployment, suicide attempt history, alcohol family history, dual disorder than subject without suicide ideation.
Second, suicide attempt history, depression, alcohol use were significantly related to the suicidal ideation. Third, alcohol use moderated between depression and suicidal ideation of alcoholics. Based on these findings, the research discussion reinforced the importance of suicidal prevention program for alcoholics and suggested effective intervention program.
